Dance
The Dance Department at Engadine High promotes opportunities for performance in dance both in school and as extra curricular activities. Our aims are to encourage students to develop knowledge and understanding, skills and attitudes in Performing, Composing and Valuing Dance. The main aim of the syllabus is for students to study Dance as an ‘Artform’.
Dance involves the development of physical skill as well as aesthetic and artistic understanding. The dance curriculum aims to develop physical, cognitive, creative and performance skills, and knowledge in all students regardless of previous experience or level of skill. Students learn to develop ideas and to express them creatively as they make and perform dances and analyse and interpret dance as works of art. They think imaginatively and share ideas, feelings, values and attitudes while physically and intellectually exploring the communication of ideas, themes and feelings through movement.
Years 9 – 10
Dance is an elective study in Years 9 and 10 that uses the Board of Studies Dance Syllabus and covers three major areas: performance, composition and appreciation. The integration of the practices of performance, composition and appreciation is a key feature of the course and provides opportunities for students to explore and understand their world. A variety of dance styles will be utilised including jazz, modern contemporary and musical theatre/tap. Students will be provided with opportunities to display their performance skills to a variety of audiences and also to be involved in whole school performances such as Rock Eisteddfod and the School Spectacular and students will also be encouraged to audition for the Senior Dance Ensemble. The opportunity to view performances by professional Dance Companies will be provided, where appropriate.
