Year 6 Gifted & Talented Program
During Term 2 Engadine High Schools hosts an enrichment class which runs on Wednesdays from 9.00am to 2.30pm. Students love the program and look forward to these exciting and challenging days.
Selection for inclusion in the program is based on the following criteria:
- Intellectually capable and would benefit from involvement in an innovative enrichment program;
- Able to adapt socially to a variety of new peers; and
- Currently in Year 6 in a local primary school.
The program caters for gifted children by providing challenging activities which broaden their perspective on learning. The focus is on the use of higher order thinking skills and problem-solving based learning. Activities complement the Stage 3 curriculum with the aim of deepening students’ knowledge and understanding.
The days run as a series of workshops which enable students to be immersed in particular topics and mini-projects. The benefits of the immersion technique allows for in-depth processing of the knowledge to be acquired and higher quality work to be produced. Students are expected to work collaboratively with their peers in completing particular projects.
Focus areas include Science & Technology, Creative & Performing Arts, English and Mathematics and Archaeology.
The program is the joint initiative of public schools in the Heathcote, Helensburgh and Engadine areas.
