Mathematics

The Mathematics Faculty at Engadine High provides students with a learning environment which nurtures individual problem-solving skills as well as teaching traditional mathematical skills. We encourage students to demonstrate initiative and share their thoughts, experiences and understanding of mathematics wider than the classroom. Studying mathematics provides students with skills to learn to describe, reason, predict, calculate, estimate, measure, interpret and communicate information presented in a numerical, symbolic, geometrical, graphical, statistical, and algebraic form.

All students in years 7 to 10 follow the teaching program and learning continuum as outlined by the NSW Board of Studies’ syllabus “Mathematics K-10” (see www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/schoolcertificate/. Teaching and learning content extends the learning outcomes attained in stages 4 and 5 on the NSW Board of Studies’ syllabus “Mathematics K-10” (see www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/schoolcertificate/ The focus of the syllabus is to provide students with a detailed and extensive program of mathematics which will allow them to show their individuality and to ‘work mathematically’. It connects mathematics to matters beyond the classroom. The five areas of working mathematically are:

  • Applying strategies: students develop, select and use a variety of strategies and technologies to solve and explore solutions and problems.
  • Communication: students develop and use appropriate language and representations to formulae and express their mathematical ideas.
  • Questioning: students ask questions in relation to mathematical situations and their experiences.
  • Reasoning: students develop and explore relationships, checking solutions and give reasons to support their conclusions.
  • Reflecting: students reflect on their experiences and understanding to make connections with, and generalisations about, existing knowledge and understanding.

The Mathematics Faculty has developed a set of teaching programs based on the “Mathematics 7-10” syllabus.
